In conservative patriarchal cultures, middle-aged single men are treated as if they were gay, unable to take care of themselves or flat out ignored. If the point of patriarchy is a controlling attitude about women, not having one makes you look inadequate and weak. And people will presume you don't even know how to cook yourself a cup of tea, let alone do the cooking and dishwashing.
