I think it was Madonna who said she's not a singer because she can sing (she even admitted not being very good at it) but because she had something to say. I'd dare to say the same about writing. If whatever you write about has substance and quality, it will find its way to the audience. As a published author, I can say they're the indisposable other end of the equation. But you can't hide when you like the very process and it gets a natural response. I used to run into strangers who'd tell me some of my work changed their perspective. I'd be an asshole if I said it didn't immensely flatter me.
