Biden was likely forced into a deal with the party leaders after the debate disaster: they first publicly pressured him with alleged "leaks" of carefully selected statements and then virtually pushed out when money stopped coming in should they keep him on board. Nothing selfless or heroic about it. He was a liability. So in the end, the party grants Kamala the nomination in the hope she'll hold on to Biden's agenda without upsetting the public by the fact that they had no say in who would be their party's nominee. The charade is so transparent that you need to be blind to believe what they're saying now is true. Of course they're now throwing all sorts of superlatives at him, but more out of relief than gratitue because he was driving their campaign straight into the wall.
